In the backstreets of Harajuku, beyond the Kitty-Chan clad kids and the Gothloli girls lives a little place called Sakuratei. This space of joy serves up the widest variety and possibly the yummiest Okonomiyaki and Monjayaki in an ultra cool and relaxed Japanese house. Good times prevail, it is mix and match heaven. Pick a flavor, pick a style, be creative, mix it up, slap it on the hot plate, top it off with more mixtures and wash it down with refreshing lemon sours.
Not coming to Harajuku anytime soon? Never fear. An okonomiyaki party is easy peasy lemon sour squeezey, also super fun and tasty.
A quick search will provide you with plenty of recipes for Okonomiyaki. The three basic ingredients are flour, egg and cabbage. While that combo may not sound very appetising on it's own, the secret is in the additives. This is where you can let your mind run free, light your culinary fires! Personally I am a huge fan of the kimchi, potato and cheese okonomiyaki. Some corn, broccoli and mochi is also pretty devine.

The beautiful thing about Japanese pancakes is they are great for giving the impression that you are somewhat of a wizard in the kitchen (even if you pretty much suck at it!) We recommend whipping up some top shelf okonomiyaki for all those you wish to impress, chances are you will probably be impressing yourself also and definitely making your tastebuds happy.
Bento.com even has a sample menu for your little pancake party. Our tip for a super successful Okonomiyaki party is to get yourself lots of funky little bowls (tis the Japanese way), fill them with all of your fav additives aswell as some tasty treats you wouldn't normally think to try; you might be surprised how good the combos can be. Grab some bigger mixing bowls for the pancake mixture. Some spoons and spatulas are always a must, a nice big hot plate or frying pan will do (it is particularly authentic if you can set up a hot plate in the middle of the dinner table) lots of fresh, tasty topping sauces and then get ready to mix, match and cook! Oh and of course if you are wanting to go all out and recreate your own little piece of Sakuratei, some bamboo mats, funky chopsticks, perhaps some paper lanterns and a group of your grooviest friends should most certainly do the trick.
We want the pics...don't forget to send us your Okonomiyaki party snapshots. Happy pancake party!
